If you’re in Canada or the United States, you may be wondering when and where you can get hold of a copy of Knife Skills For Beginners. With its central London location and somewhat ‘British’ cast of eccentrics, I hope it will appeal to fans of cozy mysteries, which are so popular across the Atlantic.
The good news is that the Canadian edition – which has a very different cover from the British one, as you can see – will be published on Tuesday 27 February. Why the change of cover? Well, I’m reliably informed that overseas publishers almost always like to design their own cover, in order to position the book correctly for their market, and I love this somewhat dark and sinister approach, with its creative use of knife imagery. What do you think?
I had the delight of meeting my UK cover designer, Irene Martinez Costa, last month when I visited Transworld in London; she says it was fortuitous but she was dressed in the same blue as the book. The Canadian cover was designed by Zeena Baybayan, and if a plan I’m hatching to visit Canada next year comes off, I hope to meet her too.
I can’t wait to see the USA cover - and I will share it when I do - but I’m afraid you have to wait until January 2025 for the American edition.
We have also sold the rights to Knife Skills For Beginners in Germany, Italy, Spain and Poland, so stand by for their cover designs when they show up. (I’m slightly disappointed – I’ll admit it – that the story hasn’t been snapped up by a French publisher, but maybe it’s something about British food…)
